The 26 planets in Astarlagia all take different amounts of time to revolve around the suns and rotate about their axes. These lengths of time are known as rev's and rot's, respectively. Before these planets were colonized, Planet A developed a system of keeping time. There were 137 rots in a rev and 1568 rattas in a rot (a ratta was defined as the length of time it took for King Noovo VI to use the bathroom.)

Any particular time is written ratta-rot-rev. One time may be 405-21-33, which is the 405th ratta of the 21st rot of the 33rd rev of Planet A, which happens to be the date that Nama Therpellow discovered the sky.

When Planet B was colonized, they kept time there for several rots before realizing that they needed a separate time system. So Planet A defined a "mote" as the fixed amount of time it takes for one molecule of Sagrasminate-97 to fall 1/184255th of a pog at sea level on Planet A in precise conditions (see mote definition conditions, appendix BD, pgs 132-156). A rot on Planet A consisted of 3230 motes to Planet B's 1444, and now the time on one planet could be calculated on the other planet. Admittedly, mote-rot-rev was not as catchy.

On any planet other than A, the written time would need a letter in front. B-1021-98-20 (Late evening, mid-rev, rev 20) is not the same as 1021-98-20, which without a letter is assumed to be the time on Planet A.

As colonization spread, some planets thought the time ought to be written planet-rev-rot-mote, or planet-rev-mote-rot, or even rot-rev-planet-mote. Some planets even continue to use the outdated ratta instead of the mote. This has led to many mix-ups and poor fiction plots.

Planet B

Title of the comic which details the adventures of the main characters.

The planet itself was the first one to be colonized by planet A.

Planet B is the first planet in the system of Astaralgia to be colonized. Its founder, Ulth Alon, was an aristocrat of Planet A's society, known for fancying himself a mighty conqueror. (Ulth stands 2/3 as high as the average for his species.)

Its full name is much longer. Ulth, not content with one or two words, decided to name the planet his entire life story. It starts "Before-the-demons-of-time-came-into-existence..." The rest can be found in "Planet B", the two-volume set written down by Ulth himself.

Ulth's colony landed on the continent of Loy, later discovered to be the least habitable of the continents. Ulth insisted they stay, saying that "real men" could handle the harsher conditions.

He went on to attempt to outdo himself with naming Planet C ("Clearings-and-craters-set-the-stage-for-the-continuation-of-Ulth's-constant-conquest...") but keeled over by the time he had written down page 24.

Polyvoluoid

The Polyvoluoid species breaks the brains of most geneticists, far surpassing the dominant and recessive genes in terms of complexity. Despite there being only three real traits, the biology of the Polyvoluoid is in sharp defiance of any kind of control or pattern. The entire genome can be found in any individual in the species.

Socially, it has long been their standard that a polyvoluoid's name is determined by its three traits: The first name by its shape, middle by color, and last by size. In large gatherings it is necessary for the latter two to consist of exact numbers, this is known as its exact name. In small families, however, numbers can be replaced by simple names, as sort of a "name of endearment".

The shape of a polyvoluoid is surfaces and edges, with the occasional vertex. The average amount of surfaces is 7, while extremes include 3 and 28 surfaces. Whole books are written about the formula for naming a polyvoluoid based on shape, so in this margin we can only provide examples.
8 surfaces + edge curvature + radial symmetry + surface shapes + one vertex = Octohefopulgomeradosh.

Hue, saturation and value all contribute to a polyvoluoid's unique color, represented as decimals.
Hue: With red = 0 and 3, green = 1, and blue = 2.
Saturation: With 0 = dull and 1 = vibrant.
Value: 0 = black and 1 = colorful.
Suppose one has a hue between blue and green, toward the bluer side. His first decimal can be estimated as about 1.8. Its saturation is very near gray, which makes the second decimal about 0.3. For the latter two, tt's considered impossible that one would have a decimal of exactly 0 or 1, so its third decimal of value would likely be about 0.95. The full middle name would be 1.8.3.95.

Size is measured in volume rather than height. The average volume of a polyvoluoid is 5.4 cubic pogs, while the smallest and greatest on record are 2.1 and 9.2 cubic pogs, respectively. Since Polyvoluoids are exact mathematical shapes, they can easily calculate their own volume.

The simplest Polyvoluoid shape is that of a cylinder. An sample volume of one comes to about 5.52 cubic pogs. In large meetings, it might be referred to as Trigonamog 1.8.3.95 5.52, or, if necessary, Trigonamog 1.82856.30977.95561 5.52031. Its family name, then, is Trigonamog Bluishgreendullybright Pentapentado, or simply Trig.
